Muse vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Matthew Bellamy has little time to worry about a "Sunburn." Since the release of their full-length debut, Showbiz, Muse has been headlining shows in France, opening for Bush in Germany and the U.K., and are about to join up with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters for a string of U.S. dates in March and April. Let’s not forget they also have a batch of headlining shows back in the U.K. in May and June as well.

That’s why Showbiz sounds crisp, yet raw constant touring has refined the talents of bassist Chris Wolstenholme, drummer Dominic Howard, and Bellamy. After recording EPs in 1997 and 1998 they hit the road to support these releases and their live reputation grew. By the time they hit the CMJ (College Music Journal) Convention in 1998 they had the goods and performed with passion, winning over the audience of radio programmers and executives. The end of 1999 saw the release of their first full-length release and Bellamy joined fans online for a chat on twec.com to discuss Showbiz, touring, and more!

twec.com would like to welcome Matt Bellamy from Muse to today's chat! Hello Matt! Matt Bellamy: Sorry we're late. We had to film a TV program.

mybelle: How did the three of you meet?
Matt Bellamy: We all come from different parts of England, and we moved to Devon when we were about ten. We met in school around age 14.

elsie: In "Sober" the lyrics ‘Royal Canadian blended...’ - what Canadian Beer were you drinking?
Matt Bellamy: It's bourbon.

blackened blue: What lyric from your songs sums you up most and why?
Matt Bellamy: ’My plug in baby crucifies my enemies when I'm tired of living.’

paula: What's been your most embarrassing event on stage?
Matt Bellamy: One time all the instruments broke, and I had to sing all the songs with just me and the drums.

julie: When did Matt start playing the piano?
Matt Bellamy: Around 9. I think since I was born!

Tiz: Why don't you play "Hate This And I’ll Love You" on stage? This is a very good song!
Matt Bellamy: Good question. I don't really have an answer. Maybe we should. We prefer the heavier rock stuff for the live shows.

sweetcoffee: Will there be a tour in the US?
Matt Bellamy: Yes, with the Chili Peppers.

Andrea: Did you enjoy touring Germany?
Matt Bellamy: : Yeah, touring with Bush was great.

blandineeliz: How are Alan and Sean (from the Muse crew) doing?
Matt Bellamy: Stressed, and under a lot of pressure. Doing lots of TV stuff and gigs, 2 setups a day. Lots of extra work.

tuyen: Where can we find the song "Recess?"
Matt Bellamy: It will be a b-side to "Unintended" in the UK.

elsie: What's it like being on Madonna's label? Have you met her?
Matt Bellamy: No, we haven't met her. It doesn't really feel like we're really on the label, because we haven't been in the States much. We don't know what it feels like to be on Maverick!

Ideal_Crash: Matt, who did you write the song "Unintended" for?
Matt Bellamy: My girlfriend.

musette: Will "Feeling Good" be a b-side in the future?
Matt Bellamy: Yeah, it will definitely be released in some way. Either a b-side or a cover album.

Emily: Hi, what's been the best gig you've ever done so far?
Matt Bellamy: Memory fades after a while, but I'd say maybe Manchester the other day - we're headlining. Or La Bataclan in Paris.

Tiz: What is the meaning of the tittle "Muscle Museum?"
Matt Bellamy: Mostly problems. The problems the body can cause the soul. All minds and souls will be connected in cyberspace, and bodies will become a thing of the past. I got the idea from a book a few years back.

blandineeliz: Do you know which festival (in UK or France) you're going to do during the summer?
Matt Bellamy: We'll be doing all the major UK festivals, but nothing is confirmed yet. We'll also be doing some in France,Holland,Germany, but we don't know exactly yet.

Jen: Do you know if "Spiral Static" will be on the next UK album, or as a b-side?
Matt Bellamy: It's most likely to be a b-side. It's on the Japanese album. That will be an import to other countries.

jasonperry: What will new single be?
Matt Bellamy: In the US it will be "Cave," and "Sunburn" in Germany and the UK.

StuntGirl: Why are those people in the "Muscle Museum" video crying?
Matt Bellamy: They're crying because you can see the inner beauty of humans when emotion takes over.

Jen: What are all the names you've been through before settling on Muse?
Matt Bellamy: Fixed Penalty, Gothic Plague, Carnage Mayhem, Youngblood - but these were all when we were like 12 or 13.

musette: You've started smashing instruments again - are we gonna see a full scale reversion to the Gothic Plague days with makeup and everything?
Matt Bellamy: Musette, you probably won't see any makeup anytime soon!

paula: Who are your influences?
Matt Bellamy: I started off about 10 with Robert Johnson and Ray Charles. I learned jazz piano and boogie-woogie blues piano. Then I got into Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Wedding Present. Then at 17 I liked Spanish guitar and classical music. I opened up to stuff like Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Chopin, Berliose, and a lot of Sacred Renaissance music.

Ideal_Crash: Is it hard to have friends when you are in the ‘showbiz?’
Matt Bellamy: No, we have loads and loads of friends - but they're all fake! No, seriously, it's easy to keep friends.

sandrita: What is your most emotive song?
Matt Bellamy: "Showbiz."

Nadia: What did you do for the millenium?
Matt Bellamy: I was in Reykavik, Iceland. I broke into this big glass dome where Bjork was playing. It was full of celebrity types in suits. So we had to climb up the fire escape, and an old drunk English guy let us in at about 11:30.

slasky: I heard one of my friend say that you are the Nirvana of the year 2000. What do you think about this?
Matt Bellamy: I think they're wrong!

Naomi: What was the cover song that you did in Bristol? (‘It's a new dawn, it's a new day...’)
Matt Bellamy: "Feeling Good," Nina Simone.

marilou: Will you do another Webcast soon?
Matt Bellamy: Yeah. We don't know when, but we're working on it.

musette: Is the trailer on the back of your tour bus a padded cell for you to go and vent your anger in?
Matt Bellamy: No, but it should be!

Suzie: What does Muse mean?
Matt Bellamy: Without sounding rude - look it up in the dictionary.
